Hall of Fame
Recognised for their outstanding contribution
First introduced in 2005, The DCN Hall of Fame inductee is selected by senior members of the Daily Cargo News. Inductees of the Hall of Fame are recognised for their outstanding contribution to Australia’s maritime industry.
Ravi Nijjer
Ravi Nijjer is a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to maritime safety, an Honorary Fellow of the Australasian Maritime Pilots Institute and a fellow of the Australian Institute of Navigation.
Born in India in 1942, his remarkable maritime career stemmed from the feeling that there was more to life than what was on offer in his landlocked hometown of Jalandhar in Punjab.
In 1960 he was accepted as a cadet with the Shipping Corporation of India. Not only did he get to see the world, but it also allowed him to meet his future wife Janice in Fremantle. They later married and settled in Melbourne.
After completing sea time in Hong Kong for his masters qualification he moved to Australia in 1970 and studied at the Sydney Technical College under the tutelage of the legendary Captain Bill Heighway who was college principal.
Perhaps Ravi's greatest achievement and for which he is justly world-famous, is his championing and constant evolution of Bridge Resource Management (BRM), as well as numerous other initiatives in navigation, pilotage, training and safety.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau says it is “not surprising then that [Ravi’s] name became synonymous with BRM”. This has only been part of his enormous contribution to maritime safety, and the ATSB (and its predecessor) note their valuable association with Ravi and his work.
A naturally humble man, Ravi's work with and for maritime industry bodies and companies across the globe has created an enduring legacy.
